A Comparative study on Nurses¡¯Role Conflict and Job Satisfactions in ICU and General Unit

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the level of role conflict and Job satisfaction of Nurses working in ICU and General Ward.
The subjects of this study were 56 nurses in ICU and 154 nurses in general unit from 5 general hospitals which had over 300beds in Kwang-Ju and Chonnam province. The data were collected from July 15 to August 10, 2000 using questionnaires. The tool used in this stydy were "Role conflict scale"developed by Kim Mun Sil and Park Sang Yun(1994) and "the Index of work satisfaction" developed by Kim Suk Ja(1992).
The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation using the SAS program.
The results of this study were as follows:
1. The score of Role conflict of nurses in ICU was higher than that in general unit, the score of role ambiguity and non
supportive environmental system factors were statistically significant difference.
2. The score of job satisfaction between the nurses in ICU and general unit was no significant difference.
3. There were no significant relationship between job satisfaction and role conflict in both groups of nurses.
4. In ICU nurses, according to the educational level, the score of role cinflict was significant difference. In general unit nueses, according to marital status, the score of role conflict was significant difference; according to age, periods of work, expected periods of work, and motivation to select nursing, the score of job satisfaction were significant difference..
In conclusion, it was showed that the role conflict of nurses in ICU was higher than in general unit but the relationship between job satisfaction and role conflict in both groups of nurses was no significant difference.
